An Indianapolis man was arrested on Friday after a severely beaten puppy was pulled from his home by officials.
The 24-year-old, Lemontrae Bible, was charged with torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, reported the Indy Star.
Officers responded to Bible’s home after a report of a shooting.
They found that Bible’s girlfriend had accidentally shot herself in the leg. While at the home they discovered the 4-month-old puppy, Halsey, with serious injuries, including a cracked skull and a broken leg.
“This is one of the worst cases of animal abuse I have ever seen,” Tara Harris, director of Every Dog Counts Rescue, Indianapolis, which is helping the pit bull with surgery and rehab, told the Star.”Usually we see one injury, this is a case of multiple injuries all over the body.”
Every Dog Counts Rescue said on its Facebook page over the weekend that Halsey is recovering well in her new foster home, although there’s concern she received permanent brain damage as a result of the abuse.
After a few months, she will be ready for adoption.
“We’ve already received several applications for her. Since you’re willing to adopt a pit bull, we ask you to consider that Halsey is only one of tens of thousands of pit bulls who need new homes. Please consider asking us about the many other pit bulls in our rescue, some of whom have waited years for a new home. Or visiting your local shelter and adopting another pit bull who, unlike Halsey, is still in danger of being euthanized,” the rescue stated.
“Adopt. Not because of the dog’s story, but for the chapters that are yet to be written.”
Harris told Fox that it appears some pictures of the dog were previously uploaded online but people did nothing about the abuse.
“I would like people to think about that if there is a voiceless victim that you know is being injured whether that’s a child or a puppy or an elderly person,” said Harris. “If they don’t have their own voice, it’s really important people contact authorities.”
